Witches’ Cabaret – Creating Community and Change through Live and Streaming Performance

Witches’ Cabaret is an ongoing, devised performance project helmed by
Mireya Lucio and Sallie Merkel (co-creatrixes of The Commons and founders of Emotional Labor Co.), in which they gather covens of women, non-binary, and queer performers to develop a group spell in the form of an evening cabaret through a process-based feminist ethos. Each iteration of Witches’ Cabaret sets a unique intention (past examples include: making visible invisible modes of feminized labor, raising funds, destroying/grieving/imagining, and honoring death).

In this 60-minute workshop we will share practical tools, skills and concepts for creating your own Witches Cabaret. We will discuss the creation of community agreements, non-hierarchical modes of performance generation and the performance traditions that inform our work. Participants will be guided through a collective intention-setting ritual and a series of (optional) performative exercises that explore individual ways of activating our collective desires. No performance experience necessary!
